Treñas to increase allowances of teachers
City Mayor Jerry Treñas is planning to increase the allowances of teachers following the impressive result of the 2008-2009 National Achievement Test (NAT) in public elementary schools. Iloilo had a percentage score of 68.82, which is better compared to last year’s result.
The planned increase in teacher's allowances is a reward for the teachers.
Treñas said Iloilo City is the center for excellent education and the improvement in the NAT result of public elementary schools is another feather on the cap of the teachers and officials of the Iloilo City Schools Division.
The increase will be channeled through the supplemental budget of the city.
In the 2008-2009 NAT result, the Nabitasan Elementary School ranked number 1 for three consecutive school years. They have an average score of 86.75 percent. The city government has been pouring support to the school considering their performance. The support came in form of school equipment for the use of the students.
Education has been one of the priority projects of the Treñas administration. The city has linked with different private organizations for the improvement of the public schools here. Computers and other instructional materials were provided to the public schools in order that pupils will not be left behind with the kind of learning materials available in private schools. The city has also allotted millions of pesos for the procurement of notebooks and bags given for free to thousands of pupils every school opening.
Aside from the teachers, the mayor is also planning to increase the allowances of volunteer workers hired by the city government.
